The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) regulates the way in which investigations are carried out by public bodies and updates the law on the interception of communications to take account of technological change such as the growth of the Internet. In addition, RIPA puts other intrusive investigative techniques on a statutory footing, provides new powers to help combat the threat posed by rising criminal use of strong encryption and ensures that there is independent judicial oversight of the powers in the Act. Consistent with the Human Rights Act 1998, RIPA creates a system of safeguards to ensure compliance with the requirements of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Memex RIPA is a secure, electronic system for managing surveillance applications, whilst recording the management information necessary to oversee the authority process legally required by all UK public bodies. It includes a full set of RIPA compliant forms, easing data entry and providing standardisation of the data entry mechanism. This significantly reduces time spent by officers and staff keying in data, and improves efficiency, freeing them to concentrate on crime reduction – not paperwork.
In addition to providing flexible form management to meet the needs of individual organisations, Memex RIPA provides the same advanced search and analysis tools inherent in all Memex applications And as surveillance authorisations are not infinite, Memex has automated the review process in conjunction with email systems, ensuring that relevant users are prompted to adhere to review and renewal dates, prior to the expiry of the surveillance application. This assists organisations in keeping the review process in-line with legal requirements and codes of practice.
